At first glance, with the sketches that announce the beginning of each chapter and the artistic pedigree of the author, the reader is lulled into thinking it's a book about art written for artists. In fact it's really a book about life written for everybody. And because the chapters are quite short, the reader is lulled into thinking the book is simplistic. In fact, its brevity is a reflection of the simplicity on the other side of complexity spoken of by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., the tough-loving simplicity of a great teacher pushing her students to leave the comforts of their nests, face down their fears, and do their best work.If you liked Steve Pressfield's trilogy The War of Art, Turn Pro, and Do the Work (if you didn't, go back and read them again because you obviously missed something), you will also like Learn, Create, and Teach. And, as with Pressfield's books, you will find yourself returning to it for periodic reminders and sharing it with others who need to be given a good shake.

Nice collection on personal journey of an artist. Useful tips and helpful tricks to use along your own personal art story.
Not one for writing reviews but this was a wonderfully inspirational book. I am an art educator and artist so much of this hit home for me. The candler and openness of Ms. Lieu's writing goes way beyond anything I have read about creating, teaching and living your life filled with the joys and struggles we have all felt. A must read for anyone interested in an artistic life or someone trying to understand the creative mind!

Haven't read the whole book yet but I read the Intro and I like what I read...looking forward to this as my summer book reading.
Well what can I say? I loved it from start to finish - It's a quick read about an hour and a half, nevertheless it is filled with great advice - Not the kind of patronizing or know-it-all stuff but good sound advice put across in a very friendly and nonchalant manner. There's no getting bogged down in jargon or convoluted philosophizing. Clara's book is oriented towards students, professionals and teachers of Art and is thus laid out in these sections in the book. It has to be said that in spite of being a book related to Art its advice can be applied to any discipline, such is its common sense and poignancy. It's the kind of book that you can go back to again and again, open a page and get something refreshing.
To sum up, I want to say that this book is going to be placed alongside another small little book in my house "The Prophet" by Kahil Gibran, and that is certainly the best praise I can give it.
Author Clara Lieu, also mother, student, teacher, and artist has made a creative guide, accessible to anyone. In Learn Create and Teach she brings all of her personal experiences, artistic knowledge and practice, along with students' voices and poetic illustrations into chapters that encapsulate all parts of living an artistic life. The chapters are short in length but very powerful in meaning they actually serve as letters to any creator. This is a guidebook to balancing your everyday with making work and devoting yourself to creating. There is something in this book for everyone, just as there is an inner student in everyone. In fact, I would recommend this book to everyone, especially "students."
Reminiscent of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, they resonate a personal voice that engages us each individually. She can spark a creative wildfire in you, challenge you, you can cover so much ground and in the wake of what feels like destruction and defeat there is still growth and creation. As meditative and self-reflective, it is also quite universal while providing the readers with the specific and personal examples of her adventures in the art world, these are life lessons that can be used in all aspects of life she opens your mind. How do you want to make your work/life? These are her secrets! This is what shapes her and she is sharing it with us!
This is the kind of book that you will reach out to like an old friend, over and over again, because she will always be there and every time you read it there will be another nuance for you to grasp. Clara put so much into this little book and this book has so much to give, it is really an opportunity for us all to grow, expand our minds and lead fulfilling, creative lives. Clara Lieu is a brilliant artist and professor as well as an influential and thoughtful creative guide. Her credibility and insight artistically is profound, just as is her body of work. I am always looking forward to what she will make next. I hope this book can do for you what it has done for me. now grow!
